In the information age, a surprising number of crimes are now committed online. From cyberstalking to an internet scam and copyright infringement, there are many types of internet crimes. Furthermore, life may never return to normal for someone charged with one of these crimes, even if they were wrongfully accused. In Dallas, Texas, and across the nation, more and more people are finding themselves in this position and have no idea what to do next.
The Internet Crime Complaint Center, which is partnered with the FBI and National White Collar Crime Center, reports that they received more than 260,000 complaints of internet crimes in 2013. The IC3 received more complaints from California, Florida and Texas than other states and listed a number of the common scams and illegal techniques that were reported, such as employment scams, fraudulent anti-virus software and much more. Clearly, internet fraud is a major issue and has become increasingly prevalent in recent years.
The consequences for cyber crimes vary, depending on the nature of the crime. However, some people are surprised to find out just how serious the penalties are. According to the Connecticut General Assembly's website, someone convicted on first-degree computer hacking charges may have to deal with as much as $15,000 in fines and could spend 20 years behind bars.
Whether someone is charged with cyber bullying, computer fraud, identity theft or any other internet crime, it is essential for them to have their case closely reviewed on an individual basis. Furthermore, it is important for people in this position to understand every legal option and present their case appropriately.
